Description These buildings are a part of East Cambridge, MA where there is a mixture of old and new industry. The old industry is represented by the brick warehouses, which are being renovated into office buildings. The new industry is represented by the biotech facilities operated by some of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the country. For example, the facility in the background belongs to Novartis. Biotech research is often identified by the numerous hooded ventilation stacks and a variety of large and small stacks. This indicates that either drug laboratories or manufacturing exists at the facility. These biotech companies are populating this East Cambridge neighborhood due to the proximity to MIT, Harvard medical schools and numerous research hospitals in the Boston area.
Brian Rojo, Arlington, MA. Member Since March 2011 Artist Statement I'm a landscape architect with a curious eye for finding beauty and meaning in unexpected places. My portfolio contains many subjects, with an emphasis on landscape and architectural photography. I worked as a landscape architect for many years until I became disabled with a genetic disorder. As a result, I'm using photography as a means of expression, replacing the artistic sensibilities that I once found in my profession of designing landscapes and gardens. My aim is to seek out strong compositions and unique viewpoints of familiar and unfamiliar subjects. My interests range from rural to urban landscape, from modern to historic architecture, from plants to vernacular objects, from a sense of place to a sense of wonder. Ultimately, I hope to encourage others to find the beauty in their environment, and to be curious of the unfamiliar.
